West Virginia tax sales

lien state

West Virginia sells tax liens on real estate whose property taxes stay delinquent. By September 10 each year the county sheriff prepares a list of delinquent lands, and the tax liens on them are certified to the State Auditor on October 31. The Auditor then sells each certified tract's tax lien at public auction at the county courthouse, within 90 days after certification, to the highest bidder for at least the taxes, interest and charges due. Under W. Va. Code §11A-3-56 the owner may redeem at any time before a tax deed is issued, paying interest at one percent per month from the date of sale; an unredeemed purchaser can then pursue a tax deed.

Why we don't list West Virginia sales

West Virginia's tax lien sales are run by the State Auditor's County Collections Division, and the Auditor's website limits data taken from it to individual use, so we don't list county sale dates here. By law, unpaid liens are certified to the Auditor on October 31 and sold at each county courthouse within 90 days; the Auditor's County Collections page posts each county's sale.
