Louisiana tax sales

lien state

Under the law in effect since January 1, 2026, Louisiana parish tax collectors auction tax lien certificates on immovable property with unpaid taxes; the property itself is not sold at the auction. The parish tax collector advertises the auction on or before May 1 of the year after the taxes were assessed, and the auction may be held on any weekday. Bidding is competitive on the interest rate: bids start at a maximum of one percent per month and bidders bid the monthly rate down. The state constitution requires a period during which the lien cannot be enforced, giving the owner time to pay before the certificate holder can act.
