Rhode Island tax sales

redeemable deed state

In Rhode Island, each city or town tax collector can advertise and sell real estate with unpaid taxes at a collector's sale. The buyer gets a tax title that can still be redeemed at any time before a petition to foreclose the right of redemption is filed. That petition can be brought after one year from the sale. To redeem from a private buyer, the owner pays the purchase price plus interest at one percent per month, costs and a penalty; when the city or town itself bought the property, the penalty is ten percent of the purchase price within six months of the sale, plus one percent for each later month.
