Washington does not sell tax liens. Once property taxes have been delinquent for three years, the county treasurer may start foreclosure by issuing certificates of delinquency, and the property is then sold by the treasurer at a public auction, which may be held online. The minimum bid is the total of the taxes, interest and costs. The owner can redeem up to the close of business the day before the sale; after the sale the treasurer issues a tax deed, with a three-year redemption right only for minors or legally incompetent owners.
