- County-held tax liens can be bought by assignment in person or by mail. Counter customers are served first come, first served; duplicate mailed payments go to the earliest postage date, and a random drawing decides matching postmarks. All paperwork must be in the Treasurer's office before an assignment is issued. Contact the office before sending the two-week notice the law requires to the property owner. The county advises using an attorney if you are unfamiliar with Montana law. Fees, interest and payment methods are not stated.
