How to bid
Bid in person at the auction held by the Orange County Sheriff's Department on the Orange County Courthouse steps, 106 E. Margaret Lane, Hillsborough. Sales are advertised for two weeks beforehand in the News of Orange or the Chapel Hill Herald. The highest bidder pays the full bid amount at the end of the sale (not a deposit) in cash or certified funds payable to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, plus excise tax and recording fees. A ten-day upset bid period follows, filed with the Orange County Clerk of Court by 5:00 p.m. on the tenth day after the Report of Sale is filed; an upset bid must be at least 5% higher and not less than $750, in cash or certified funds. If no upset bid is filed, the sale is confirmed and the Sheriff delivers a non-warranty Sheriff's Deed. Properties are sold as is. Registration steps are not stated.
