Alabama tax sales
hybrid state
In Alabama each county's tax collecting official (the revenue commissioner or tax collector) decides how to collect delinquent property taxes: by selling the property itself at a public tax sale, or by selling the county's tax liens at a public auction. Under the tax-sale method, the Alabama Department of Revenue says a public tax auction is held every year, usually around the first Monday in May, and the owner may redeem within 3 years of the sale by paying the taxes, fees and interest at 12% per annum. Under the tax-lien method, the official auctions delinquent tax liens, the certificate earns the interest rate the buyer bid at the auction, and the holder may not file to foreclose until three years after the auction.
