Maryland tax sales

lien state

Maryland sells liens, not property: when real property taxes are in arrears, the tax collector of each county (and Baltimore City) must offer the property at a tax sale, and the buyer receives a certificate of sale. Each county runs its own sale and sets its own date and bidding rules, so check the county entries below. The owner can redeem by paying the sale amount plus interest, which state law sets at 6% a year unless a county fixes its own rate by local law. The certificate holder may file to foreclose the right of redemption 6 months after the sale (9 months for owner-occupied homes), and the certificate is void unless foreclosure is filed within 2 years.
