Iowa sells tax sale certificates (liens) on parcels with delinquent property taxes, not the property itself. Each county treasurer runs one annual tax sale, which state law sets for the third Monday in June, with a different June date allowed for good cause; many counties also hold monthly adjourned sales for parcels left unsold. To redeem, the owner pays the delinquent amount plus interest of two percent per month to the county treasurer. If the parcel is not redeemed, the certificate holder may begin the tax deed process after one year and nine months from a regular sale by serving notice of expiration of the right of redemption.
